The Naboth cyst is a small cyst that can be formed on the surface of the cervix due to the increased production of mucus by the Naboth glands that are present in this region. The mucus produced by these glands cannot be eliminated correctly due to the presence of obstruction, which favors the development of the cyst.
Naboth's cysts are quite common in women of reproductive age and are considered benign, requiring no specific treatments. However, when the presence of several cysts is verified or when the cyst increases in size over time, it is important that the woman consult the gynecologist to assess the need for removal.
Main symptoms
Naboth's cyst is characterized by a small rounded white or yellowish cyst that does not hurt or cause discomfort, and is usually identified during routine gynecological examination, such as Pap smears and colposcopy.
Some women may report symptoms, however these are usually related to the cause of the cyst. Thus, it is important to identify the cause of the symptoms and cyst in order to assess the need for treatment.
Causes of Naboth's cyst
Naboth's cyst happens due to the accumulation of secretion inside the uterus due to the blockage of the passage of mucus through the canal. This obstruction usually happens due to an infection and inflammation of the genital region, in which the body forms a protective layer of skin in the cervix, giving rise to small benign nodules in this region that can be seen in exams or senses by touching vaginal.
In addition, in some women the cyst may appear as a result of some injury to the cervix or after vaginal delivery, because these situations can promote tissue growth around the gland, leading to the formation of the cyst.
How treatment should be
In most cases, no specific treatment is necessary, as the Naboth cyst is considered a benign change and does not pose a risk to the woman.
However, in some cases, the presence of several cysts or an increase in the size of the cyst over time may be observed during gynecological examination in order to change the shape of the uterus. Thus, in these situations it may be necessary to remove the cyst through electrocauterization or with a scalpel.
