To treat a burn scar, several techniques can be used, which include corticoid ointments, pulsed light or plastic surgery, for example, depending on the degree of the burn.
However, it is not always possible to remove the entire burn scar, it is only possible to disguise it, especially in the 2nd and 3rd degree scars. Learn how to identify the degree of burn. Thus, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist to assess the texture, thickness and color of the burn scar, to identify the best treatment for each case.
Main treatments
The most used treatments to treat the scarring of each degree of burn include:
Burn type | Recommended treatment | How the treatment is done |
1st degree burn | Corticosteroid ointments or andiroba oil | They are ointments that must be applied daily on the skin to hydrate the tissues and reduce inflammation, disguising the scar. See some examples in: Ointment for burn. |
2nd degree burn | Pulsed light laser therapy (LIP) | It uses a type of pulsed light that removes excess scar tissue, disguising the color difference and reducing the relief. At least 5 LIP sessions should be done at 1 month intervals. |
3rd degree burn | Plastic surgery | Removes the affected layers of the skin, replacing them with skin grafts that can be removed from other parts of the body, such as the thighs or belly. |
In addition to these treatments, it is also advisable to eat a diet rich in foods with collagen, such as gelatin or chicken, and vitamin C, such as orange, kiwi or strawberries, as they stimulate the production of collagen, improving the appearance and elasticity of the skin.
