Panarice, also called paronychia, is an inflammation that develops around the fingernails or toenails and is caused by the proliferation of microorganisms naturally present on the skin, such as bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, mainly.
Panarice is usually triggered by pulling the cuticle skin with the teeth or with nail pliers and the treatment consists of the use of anti-inflammatory and healing ointments according to the dermatologist's recommendation.
Panarice symptoms
Panarice corresponds to an inflammatory process caused by microorganisms and, therefore, the main related symptoms are:
- Redness around the nail;
- Pain in the region;
- Swelling;
- Increased local temperature;
- Presence of pus.
The diagnosis of panarice is made by the dermatologist by observing the symptoms presented, and it is not necessary to perform specific exams. However, in case the panarice is frequent, it is recommended to perform the removal of the pus so that a microbiological examination is performed to identify the responsible microorganism and, thus, indicate the realization of more specific treatment.
Although in most cases the panarice is associated with infection by bacteria, it can also happen due to the proliferation of the fungus Candida Albicans, which is also present on the skin, or caused by the herpes virus, the infection being then known as herpetic panarice, and it happens when the person has active oral herpes, with transmission of the virus to the nail when the person gnaws or removes the skin with the teeth, this type of panarice being more related to the fingernails.
How treatment should be
The treatment of panarice is indicated by the doctor according to the signs and symptoms presented, and the use of ointments containing antimicrobials may be indicated, as this way it is possible to fight the infectious agent. In addition, it is recommended that the region is properly washed and that the person avoids biting the nail or removing the cuticle, avoiding new infections.
The panarice usually lasts from 3 to 10 days and the treatment must be maintained until complete skin regeneration. During treatment it is advisable not to leave your hands wet, using gloves whenever washing dishes or clothes. In the case of foot damage, it is recommended during treatment not to wear closed shoes.
