Cesarean delivery is at a higher risk than normal delivery, of bleeding, infection, thrombosis or respiratory problems for the baby, however, the pregnant woman should not worry, because the risk is only increased, which does not mean that these problems happen, since normally cesarean deliveries take place without complications.
Even though it is a more invasive and more risky method, cesarean section turns out to be safer and justified in some cases, such as when the baby is in an incorrect position or when there is an obstruction of the vaginal canal, for example.
Risks and complications
Although it is a safe procedure, cesarean section presents more risks than a normal delivery. Some of the risks and complications that can occur during or after surgery are:
- Infection development;
- Hemorrhages;
- Thrombosis;
- Baby injury during surgery;
- Poor healing or difficulty in healing, especially in overweight women;
- Keloid formation;
- Difficulty in breastfeeding;
- Placenta accreta, which is when the placenta is attached to the uterus after delivery;
- Placenta prev;
- Endometriosis.
These complications are more frequent in women who have had 2 or more cesarean sections, because the repetition of the procedure increases the chances of complications in childbirth and fertility problems. Know what precautions to take to recover faster from surgery.
Indications for cesarean section
Despite the risks posed by cesarean section, it is still indicated in cases where the baby is sitting in the mother's belly, when there is an obstruction of the vaginal canal, preventing the baby from leaving, when the mother suffers from placenta previa or displacement of the placenta, when the baby is suffering or when it is very large, with more than 4500 g, and in the presence of infectious diseases that can pass to the baby, such as genital herpes and AIDS.
In addition, this procedure can also be done in cases of twins, depending on the position of the babies and their health status, and the situation must be evaluated by the doctor.
Is it possible to have a normal delivery after cesarean?
It is possible to have a normal delivery after having undergone a cesarean section, as the risk of complications is low, when delivery is well controlled and monitored, bringing advantages for both mother and baby.
However, two or more previous cesarean sections increase the chances of uterine rupture, and, in these cases, normal delivery should be avoided. In addition, it is important to note that repeated cesarean sections increase pregnancy risk.
