Main types of fractures
Fractures can be classified according to the cause, and can be:
- Traumatic: they are the most characteristic of accidents, for example, in which excessive force is applied to the bone, but it can also be due to repetitive movements that gradually injure the bone, favoring the fracture;
- Pathological: are those that occur without explanation or due to small blows, as in osteoporosis or bone tumors, since they leave the bones more fragile.
In addition, fractures can be classified according to the injury into:
- Simple: only the bone is reached;
- Exposed: the skin is perforated, with the visualization of the bone. As it is an open lesion, it is more susceptible to infections, and prophylactic antibiotics are usually recommended. See what to do in case of open fractures;
- Complicated: affect other structures besides the bone, such as nerves, muscles or blood vessels;
- Incomplete: injuries to the bones that do not cause breakage, but result in fracture symptoms.
Usually the diagnosis is made by X-ray examination, but depending on the extent of the lesion and the person's characteristics and symptoms, the doctor may request another more accurate image examination, such as MRI, in addition to laboratory tests. . Find out how first aid is done on fractures.
