Erysipelas arises when a bacterium of the typeStreptococcus it can penetrate the skin through a wound, causing an infection that leads to the appearance of symptoms such as red spots, swelling, severe pain and even blisters.
Although it needs to be treated with antibiotics prescribed by the dermatologist, there are some home remedies that help to complement medical treatment and relieve symptoms, especially swelling and pain in the region. Understand how erysipelas is treated.
1. Juniper compresses
Juniper is a medicinal plant that has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antimicrobial action that reduces inflammation and pain, in addition to facilitating the elimination of the bacteria that causes the disease.
Ingredients
- 500 ml of boiling water;
- 5 grams of juniper berries.
Preparation mode
Add the ingredients and let stand for 15 minutes, then strain and store the mixture in the refrigerator. Soak sterile gauzes and freshly removed from the packaging in the tea and apply over the region affected by erysipelas for 10 minutes. Repeat the procedure 2 to 3 times a day.
A new compress should always be used for each application because it is very important that the tissue is completely clean and free of microorganisms.
2. Washing with baking soda
Sodium bicarbonate is a substance that allows a deep cleaning of the skin, helping in the treatment of erysipelas by eliminating some of the bacteria responsible for the disease. In addition, as it has anti-inflammatory property it also reduces swelling and pain.
This wash can be used before applying other types of treatment to the skin, such as juniper compresses or massage with almond oils, for example.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda;
- 500 ml of water.
Preparation mode
Combine the ingredients in a clean container or bowl, cover and store for 2 to 3 hours. Finally, use the mixture to wash the skin during the day, doing 3 to 4 washes, especially before using other remedies in contact with the skin, for example.
3. Massage with almond oil
Almond oil is a great product to nourish the skin, which is also able to relieve inflammation and eliminate infections. Thus, this oil can be used during the day to maintain skin health, especially after using other remedies to cleanse the skin, such as baking soda.

Preparation mode
Place a few drops of the oil on the affected skin and massage lightly to facilitate its absorption. Repeat this process up to 2 times a day, but avoid placing on wounds that have appeared in the region.
4. Washing with witch hazel
Hamamelis is a medicinal plant that contains antibacterial properties that help fight various types of infections. In this case, it can be used in the form of water to wash the skin affected by erysipelas, eliminating some of the bacteria and facilitating medical treatment.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of dried hamamelis leaves or bark;
- 500 ml of water.
Preparation mode
Place the ingredients in a glass container and mix. Then cover and let stand for about 3 hours. Finally, use this water to wash the skin region affected by erysipelas.
This washing can be repeated several times a day, being a good option to replace the washing with sodium bicarbonate.
