Dexchlorpheniramine maleate is an antihistamine that is available in tablets, cream or syrup, and that can be indicated by the doctor in the treatment of eczema, hives or contact dermatitis, for example.

What is it for
Dexchlorpheniramine maleate is indicated for the relief of symptoms of some allergic manifestations, such as hives, eczema, atopic and contact dermatitis or insect bites. In addition, it can also be indicated in case of reaction to drugs, allergic conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis and pruritus without specific cause.
It is important that the dexchlorpheniramine maleate is indicated by the doctor according to the cause to be treated, as the pharmaceutical form to be used varies.
How to use
The mode of use of dexchlorpheniramine maleate depends on the purpose of the treatment and the therapeutic form used:
1. 2mg / 5mL oral solution
The syrup is indicated for oral use and the dose must be individualized, according to the need and individual response of each person:
- Adults and children over 12 years old: The recommended dose is 5mL, 3 to 4 times a day, not exceeding the maximum dose of 30 mL per day;
- Children from 6 to 12 years old: The recommended dose is 2.5 mL, 3 times a day, not to exceed the maximum recommended dose of 15 mL per day;
- Children aged 2 to 6 years: The recommended dose is 1.25 ml, 3 times a day, and the maximum recommended dose of 7.5 ml per day should not be exceeded.
2. Pills
The tablets should only be used by adults or children over 12 and the recommended dose is 1 2 mg tablet, 3 to 4 times a day. The maximum daily dose is 6 tablets a day.
3. Dermatological cream
The cream should be applied over the affected skin area, 2 times a day, avoiding covering that area.
Who should not use
Any of the dosage forms with dexchlorpheniramine maleate, should not be used by people with allergies to this active substance or to any other component present in the formula. In addition, they should not be used in people undergoing treatments with monoamine oxidase inhibitors and can only be used in pregnant and lactating women, if recommended by the doctor.
The oral solution and cream are contraindicated in children under 2 years old and the tablets are contraindicated in children under 12 years old, in addition to being contraindicated for diabetics, as it has sugar in its composition.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects that can be caused by pills and syrups are mild to moderate drowsiness, while the cream can cause local sensitization and irritation, especially with prolonged use.
Other possible side effects that may arise are dry mouth hypotension, blurred vision, headache, increased urine production, sweating and anaphylactic shock, these effects being easier to take when the medication is not taken according to medical advice or when the person is allergic to any of the components of the formula.
